Join Northamptonshire Police and help us root out crime and corruption

We are transforming how we investigate crime and conduct matters relating to officers and staff to earn back the trust and confidence of our public and our workforce.

To achieve this, we are looking for experienced detectives to join our expanding Professional Standards Department.

Public confidence matters to everyone and it makes our lives more difficult if the public don’t trust us.

Securing the trust of the public is crucial to combatting and detecting crime. People need to feel safe and confident that they can seek aid and protection from the police.

National cases of officer crime and misconduct have had a lasting and detrimental impact on the police service as a whole. They have also shone a much needed light on how we investigate perpetrators within our ranks.

Now is a time to reflect on what isn’t working and to take action to win back the public trust that policing by consent relies upon.

Here in Northamptonshire Police we are radically changing how we operate. The most significant change being that PSD will now also investigate police perpetrated crimes along with misconduct and complaint matters.

While PSD are part of the wider organisation, they are an independent department that operates autonomously to ensure integrity in, and confidentiality of, all investigations.

Detectives will be empowered to own crime and related conduct investigations, removing silos to improve evidence gathering, improve outcomes and give a better level of service to victims and complainants.

Officers have significant powers that give them great responsibility. With that responsibility, it is vital that the public know and feel that if an officer fails to uphold the standard, then their actions will be dealt with robustly.

We’re looking for tenacious and resilient detectives to apply

It’s not an easy job, investigating your colleagues. Being tenacious, following things through with scrutiny and having confidence when dealing with suspects who have a good working knowledge of our processes is paramount.

Sometimes doing the right thing can be incredibly hard and people will need strong personal values and resilience to stay on track.

Transparency is very important to us. During an investigation, the victim should be kept informed and have the belief that it will be investigated thoroughly.

Applicants should have an accredited PIP2 qualification and not be in their probation period.

Do we have a problem with misconduct?

The consistent flow of national headlines relating to bad officers has affected the police service as a whole and we would be naïve to say that it doesn’t happen here. It happens everywhere.

Here at Northamptonshire we are investing heavily in PSD to ensure we are future proofing our organisation, as the custodians of standards and values we are doing everything we can to improve and maintain public safety and confidence.

Providing a first class service in dealing with crime and conduct within our ranks is also what the good people in our wider organisation deserve so that they can do their jobs safely and with pride.

Why Northamptonshire Police and why PSD?

Northamptonshire Police is pioneering new ways of combating crime and this is an exciting time to join our force.

We offer great professional development opportunities, with a comprehensive training package for transferees.

This is a great opportunity to come in from another force with fresh ideas and different skills.
