Commander Dominic Murphy, Assessment Director and Chair of the Detective Resilience Group says:
The role and rank of Detective Sergeant has never been more challenging or more important. The ability to proactively prevent crime and deliver real impact for victims is central to the successful delivery of the second phase of A New Met for London, fulfilling our commitments to the public. We are excited to launch this process today and it is a fantastic opportunity to recognise talent and develop new leaders in the Met.
Whether you are a PC or DC, this promotion process will be competitive and demanding – and we make no apology for that. We want the best people in the right roles, which is why this process is being opened up to all eligible constables – from both uniformed and detective backgrounds. For uniformed colleagues, you will be given the all the support and training needed to ensure you are ready to lead experienced colleagues in the complex investigations that a detective career involves. This means setting standards, managing risk and making sound operational decisions to create the conditions in which investigators can perform at their best.
Becoming a Scotland Yard Detective has been a source of immense personal and professional pride for me, and I know that feeling is shared by many who have taken this career path. The journey to become a detective is deliberately challenging, but the career opportunities it opens up are varied and hugely rewarding. For uniform colleagues, this may be a career path you hadn’t considered before but, if you meet the eligibility criteria, I very much hope that you will consider it now.
I wish you all the very best of luck as you embark on the next chapter of your careers.
