We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Vehicle Technician to join our team, supporting the maintenance and repair of a diverse and specialist fleet, including light and heavy vehicles equipped with advanced policing technology. This is a technically demanding and rewarding role, requiring a strong combination of mechanical expertise, diagnostic skills, and the ability to work with specialist systems and equipment.

Job Purpose

To maintain and repair a specialist fleet of police vehicles efficiently and cost-effectively, ensuring full compliance with Force policies and all legislative requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out maintenance, servicing, and repairs on a wide range of vehicles, including light and heavy goods vehicles (HGVs)
  • Perform vehicle body repairs, including panel and component replacement
  • Diagnose faults using manufacturer-specific diagnostic equipment and systems
  • Maintain and repair vehicles fitted with specialist police equipment, including warning systems and surveillance technology
  • Ensure all work meets manufacturer standards, warranty requirements, and legislative regulations
  • Conduct vehicle examinations in line with Vehicle Standards Agency (VSA) and police policies
  • Use workshop tools, machinery, and equipment safely and effectively, ensuring proper calibration
  • Prioritise workload and make informed, professional decisions regarding vehicle safety and serviceability
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues as well as independently when required

Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required

  • NVQ Level 3 in Vehicle Mechanical & Electronic Systems (Light and/or Heavy Vehicle), or equivalent experience within the motor vehicle repair industry
  • Strong knowledge of vehicle systems, repair techniques, and multi-manufacturer platforms
  • Proven experience in HGV servicing, maintenance, and repair
  • Experience working with mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical vehicle systems
  • Familiarity with vehicle diagnostics, fault finding, and manufacturer-specific diagnostic tools
  • Understanding of vehicle warranty processes and standards
  • Knowledge of specialist vehicle conversions and onboard equipment (desirable)
  • Department of Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) Nominated Tester (desirable)
  • Valid DVLA licence including Category B, C1, and D1 (or C/C+E)
  • Sound understanding of Health & Safety requirements, including COSHH and risk assessments
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively at all levels
  • Methodical, organised, and able to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Commitment to continuous professional development, including attendance at manufacturer training courses

Shift Pattern Below – Opening Hours 08:00am to 18:00pm

 

Week 1 – WED,THURS, FRI  = 3 day working week then 4 days off

Week 2 –  MON, TUES, WED =  3 day working week then  4 days off

Week 3 – MON, TUES,WED, SAT,SUN = 5 day working week then 2 days off

Week 4 – MON, THUR,FRI,SAT,SUN = 5 day working week then 2 days off

 

      ****Then after Week 4 it reverts back to Week 1 and the cycle continues.****
