Location: London, Glasgow or Cardiff (1 day a week in the office, the rest WFH)
Contract: 12 months fixed-term contract.
Salary: £61,446 – £86,547
Main Responsibilities
- Leading and delivering the highest priority, high risk and complex legal projects across Ofgem.
- Deliver significant leadership in OGC including mentoring more junior staff and leading on corporate matters including cross OGC working groups.
- Although these expert roles may not include direct line management, senior expert lawyers may be expected to lead multi-disciplinary teams in a specific work area in the context of operating in a Professions and Flexible Resourcing model, for example if they are the lead lawyer on a particular area or project.
- Plan, oversee and deliver a set of work deliverables on time and to a high standard through effective project management and support of multidisciplinary team members.
- Provide inclusive team leadership by supporting and coaching team members particularly in their area of expertise and demonstrating commitment to Ofgem values.
- Build high-quality relationships with internal stakeholders and support Ofgem engagement with external stakeholders.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Qualified to practice as a Barrister or Solicitor, in England and Wales or an Advocate or Solicitor in Scotland or
- Will be qualified 3 months from application date; or
- An overseas professionally qualified lawyer demonstrating evidence of preparedness to sit the SQE or BTT on, or soon after, appointment.
- Chartered Legal Executives are eligible to apply where (i) a Qualifying Law Degree (QLD) is held; or (ii) the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL)/CPE has been completed; or (iii) where exams have been passed and a score of 50% or above achieved, at CILEx Level 6*, in all the following foundation subjects:
- Contract Law
- Criminal Law
- Equity and Trusts Law
- European Union Law
- Land Law
- Public Law
- Law of Tort
Experience
- Ability to lead on highly complex and large legal matters and analysis. (LEAD)
- Significant legal expertise and capability, as demonstrated by proven record of high performance and substantial achievements in past positions in any one of the following:
- energy law;
- economic regulation;
- consumer protection;
- competition law;
- commercial or complex projects/procurement;
- public or administrative law or regulatory litigation in a context similar to that in which Ofgem operates, for example advising a government department, economic regulator or highly regulated industry participant.
- Exemplar legal knowledge and analysis, as the subject matter expert. Ability to demonstrate a deep technical specialism and/or a strong breadth of relevant legal knowledge and associated legal risk.
- Demonstrable and proactive commitment to the development of subject-matter expertise and capability across a legal function.
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to present findings of analysis in a clear and compelling manner to technical and non-technical audiences, and defend findings, based on evidence.
- Resilient and able to work under pressure and on demanding and challenging projects.
- Extensive experience working collaboratively with diverse colleagues.
Desirable
- Demonstrable experience of practicing law in the UK.
- Knowledge of one or more of: Information Law, Human Rights Law, Public Procurement Law, Environmental Law, Insolvency Law.
- Experience advising in relation to corporate or project finance, investment or funding agreements and financial reporting.
