Are you looking for a new and exciting opportunity? We are looking for someone with an interest in gardening to join our volunteer memorial gardening team. An ability to tell the difference between a weed and a flower is helpful, but not essential — plant Latin names are definitely not required!

What you’ll need:

  • A reasonable level of fitness, as most tasks involve bending and kneeling at ground level, with occasional light overhead pruning
  • Minimal heavy lifting or hard digging
  • A willingness to work both as part of a small team on larger projects and independently on individual tasks

About the role

This role combines gardening and light cleaning across all memorial areas. Regular tasks include:

  • Washing memorial stones and plaques
  • Scrubbing and treating wooden benches
  • Clearing moss from stonework
  • Edging paths and paving
  • Leaf clearing, weeding and mulching
  • Cleaning the fountain stone

This is a rewarding, flexible role for anyone who enjoys being outdoors and helping to care for peaceful memorial spaces.

Please see the  role profile for more information.

Other Information

Practical details:

  • Free parking is available
  • Volunteer hours are flexible to suit the individual
  • Most gardening takes place at weekends due to team availability, but weekday volunteering is also possible
  • We communicate mainly by email to share availability and identify tasks that need doing

 Health & Safety:

There may be times when you are working alone, as Victoria House is not always open at weekends

  • Toilet access is available 24/7
  • Deer ticks are present on site. Preventative measures are recommended, and it is essential to know how to safely remove a tick and when to seek medical advice. Guidance can be provided if needed

Tools:

  • Volunteers are currently asked to provide their own gardening tools
  • A shared storage area for basic items such as buckets and cleaning supplies is being developed
  • If you’re new to gardening, there’s no need to buy everything at once — a good pair of thorn‑proof gloves and secateurs are a great place to start
  • Tools can be shared initially while new volunteers work out what suits them best

Application and Interview

If you’ve never completed a competency-based application or interview before, make sure you read each competency or value in detail, research the STAR (situation, task, action, result) format and use it when giving evidence.
