Are you naturally curious, with a strong eye for detail with an interest in analytical problem solving that could contribute towards the investigation and detection of crime? Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary are seeking motivated and detail-focused individuals to join a team of operational fingerprint examiners within the Fingerprint Bureau. As a Trainee Fingerprint Examiner, you will receive training and mentoring to support your progression towards a fully competent, operational Non‑Reporting Fingerprint Examiner.

Working within an accredited forensic environment, you will use quality assured processes to analyse, compare and evaluate friction ridge detail (fingerprints, palm prints and impressions) obtained from crime scenes and exhibits. This work directly assists the identification of individuals and contributes to the investigation, detection and prevention of crime.

The role is primarily desk-based within the Bureau and requires sustained concentration, a methodical approach, and meticulous attention to detail to deliver accurate, evidentially robust outcomes for use within the criminal justice system.

You will:

  • Analyse, compare and evaluate friction ridge detail using established methodologies (ACE)
  • Work with both manual processes and national systems (IDENT1) to identify individuals
  • Manage evidential material in line with standard operating procedures to ensure integrity, continuity and security
  • Accurately document findings in compliance with the Forensic Science Regulator’s Code of Practice
  • Support investigations and the criminal justice process through the provision of timely and accurate forensic outcomes

Career Progression

This role forms part of a structured, competency-based progression pathway within the Fingerprint Bureau:

  • Trainee Fingerprint Examiner (Scale 4) – Development of core competency with full technical review
  • Assistant Fingerprint Examiner (Scale 5) – Broader casework exposure and portfolio development
  • Non‑Reporting Fingerprint Examiner (SO1) – Full operational capability across crime types
  • Progression is supported through structured training, assessment, and practical experience, including accredited learning programmes. There is a requirement to successfully complete all aspects of the training and to progress through all the grades up to and including Non‑Reporting Fingerprint Examiner.

A Modern Forensic Environment

The Fingerprint Bureau is currently progressing through a significant transformation, moving from traditional manual processes to a modern digital fingerprint capability maximising technology to perform fingerprint examinations. This provides an opportunity to work within evolving systems while maintaining the highest standards of forensic quality, integrity, and accreditation.
