12 Positions Available | Multiple Locations | Fixed Term to 31 March 2027
We are recruiting for 12 Police Staff Investigators (PSIs) to support criminal investigations across the West Mercia policing area.
PIP1 – £30,333 annual salary equivalent
PIP2 – £32,613 annual salary equivalent
These roles are all fully onsite
We are ideally seeking PIP Level 2 qualified investigators, although PIP Level 1 qualified candidates may also be considered where they can demonstrate the required knowledge, experience and key skills outlined in the role profile.

Although your primary base will be one of the above locations, you may be required to travel across the West Mercia policing area and work from different locations to support investigations.
Please note: these roles are office/field based and do not offer home working.
The Role
The main purpose of the role is to prevent and detect crime and investigate criminal activity, undertaking a wide range of evidence-gathering and criminal investigation activities involving victims, witnesses, technical sources and suspects.
You will be responsible for investigating offences and supporting investigations from initial evidence gathering through to case file preparation and, where required, attendance at court.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Investigating criminal offences and undertaking a wide range of evidence-gathering activities.
- Interviewing victims and witnesses and recording evidence through written statements or video-recorded interviews where appropriate.
- Conducting PACE-compliant suspect interviews.
- Acting as a liaison officer for victims and witnesses, providing appropriate updates and supporting them through the criminal justice process.
- Gathering and reviewing medical, forensic and other third-party evidence.
- Attending crime scenes and ensuring evidence is protected and secured to maximise forensic opportunities.
- Using technical equipment and IT systems to secure and preserve evidence, including digital cameras, audio/video recording equipment and CCTV systems.
- Supporting the preparation of evidential files for submission to the Crown Prosecution Service, ensuring high standards of quality, timeliness, disclosure and evidential integrity.
- Attending court hearings where required.
- Liaising with colleagues, other police forces, external agencies and members of the public to gather and review evidence and identify and trace offenders.
- Identifying and exploiting criminal intelligence opportunities to support the prevention and detection of crime.
- Providing specialist advice and knowledge to colleagues on crime investigation and case file management.
What We’re Looking For
We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate the following:
PIP Level 2 applicants should have:
- Current PIP Level 2 accreditation.
- Experience at an equivalent level in serious and complex crime investigation.
- Evidence of involvement in PIP 2 investigations within the last 3 years.
- Recent experience conducting Video Recorded Interviews in accordance with Achieving Best Evidence in Criminal Proceedings.
- Recent experience conducting PACE-compliant suspect interviews.
- Strong knowledge of key offences in criminal law, including major offences against the person and offences relating to Child Protection, Domestic Abuse, Rape and Serious Sexual Offences.
- Knowledge of relevant criminal procedure legislation, including PACE 1984 and CPIA 1996, as well as the Code of Practice for Victims of Crime.
- Understanding of the courts and wider criminal justice system.
- Knowledge of best evidence, investigative interviewing, case file preparation, forensics and disclosure requirements.
PIP Level 1 candidates may also be considered where they can demonstrate the knowledge, experience and key skills required for the role. Please ensure your CV clearly evidences relevant investigative experience.

- Experience working collaboratively with external agencies and partner organisations.
- Good IT skills and the ability to learn and use a variety of national and local systems.
- A willingness to undertake additional training relevant to the role, including Child VRI and Operation Soteria module training.
Important Requirements
- Full Manual UK Driving Licence required.
- Ability to travel across the West Mercia policing area.
- You may be required to work from different geographic locations on an ad-hoc basis to support investigations.
- The role involves exercising designated investigator powers as authorised by the Chief Constable.
- The role may involve exposure to occasional distressing scenes or materials.
- Enhanced security vetting required.
