At the Home Office, we work to make the UK safer, fairer and more prosperous. That means tackling threats like terrorism and organised crime, modern slavery and trafficking, shaping drugs policy, and managing immigration and passport services.

About us

Within Immigration Enforcement, our Criminal and Financial Investigation (CFI) teams work to dismantle the organised crime groups behind immigration abuse. Combining criminal and financial investigation expertise, we identify how these networks operate, remove the proceeds of crime, and strip criminals of their assets.

We work closely with partners including the National Crime Agency (NCA), territorial policing and other government departments, taking coordinated, decisive action against those who profit from illegal migration.

About the role

As a HM Inspector (Senior Executive Officer), you’ll lead the Criminal and Financial Investigation team in Glasgow, operating at the forefront of serious and organised crime. You’ll set the team’s direction and identify, disrupt and dismantle the criminal networks that exploit immigration routes and the people within them.

Working in the Scottish Crime Campus at Gartcosh, you’ll work with a wide range of partners including Police Scotland, the National Crime Agency and HMRC. Through daily collaboration, you’ll build strong relationships, share intelligence, and contribute to joint investigations that strengthen national capability.

Day to day, you’ll also provide visible, supportive and inspiring leadership for your teams, as you manage and mentor experienced investigators. You’ll allocate resources, set priorities and provide timely, accurate advice to senior leaders, shaping strategy as well as delivery in an ever-changing environment. You’ll develop investigative capability in line with evolving immigration legislation, ensuring the team stays resilient and effective as criminal threats change.

This role is based in Glasgow, but its impact doesn’t stop there. Your investigations will contribute directly to UK-wide priorities on organised immigration crime. The capability you build will move beyond any single case. And long after your work is done, you’ll carry the knowledge that you helped protect people every day.

About you

You’ll bring proven experience of leading serious and complex criminal investigations in a senior role, plus a Level 2 Professionalising Investigation Programme (PIP) accreditation, or recognised Scottish equivalent. You’ll have the professional credibility to direct activity, exercise judgement and take accountability for outcomes in complex operational environments.

You’re organised and proactive, capable of working with minimal supervision and able to manage the expectations of multiple stakeholders using your excellent written and verbal communication skills. These skills will help you share objectives, influence stakeholders and build alignment at all levels.

You’ll have knowledge of criminal investigation, law enforcement practice and the Scottish criminal justice system – this will support you as you make decisions and collaborate with partners.

Please note, due to the operational nature of the role and the necessary travel, a valid full UK (manual) driving licence is required.

Training and development

From the moment you join the Home Office you’ll receive full training and support in your role. Your training will initially take place in the classroom and continue on the job with a mentor, until you feel fully confident in your duties. Your colleagues and line manager will be ready to support you throughout.
