Met officer becomes first non-US police officer to receive honour from the US Capitol

A Met PC has received an unprecedented honour at the US Capitol as the result of his commitment to honouring fallen law enforcement officers across the world and supporting their families.

This year, PC Bhim Vekaria and MPS colleagues received an invitation to join the Honour Guard for the Presidential Party, which included the Vice President of the United States, the US Attorney General, the Director of the FBI and other senior Department of Justice dignitaries.

At the event, PC Vekaria was presented with a United States flag flown over the Capitol Building on 12 May 2026, a distinction reported to be the first time such an honour has been bestowed upon a non-US police officer.

The honour recognises his many years of service and contribution to National Police Week, a significant international event held in Washington, D.C., and centred on National Peace Officers Memorial Day, during which an address is given by The US President outside the Capitol Building

PC Vekaria was given the flag on the steps of the Capitol as well as a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the Chief of the US Capitol Police, recognising his many years of dedication and contribution to National Police Week.

PC Bhim Vekaria, who works in the Local Operations Tasking Unit, said: “This recognition is a significant honour and a source of immense pride for me. I was truly delighted to receive the invitation and to be recognised in this way.

“Since 2008, I have dedicated my own time and resources to attending National Police Week and demonstrating our commitment to strengthening international policing relationships, while honouring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of others.

“As I approach 30 years of service with the Metropolitan Police Service next year, this recognition is particularly meaningful. It reflects the value of international partnerships and the importance of remembering those who have given their lives in the line of duty.”

Commander Helen Flanagan said: “This is an outstanding achievement and a rare honour. PC Vekaria has demonstrated extraordinary dedication and personal commitment during the past 16 years to attend an annual event in Washington devoted to honouring fallen law enforcement officers across the world.

“The international recognition for PC Vekaria is well deserved and is a wonderful reflection of the best qualities of Met Police officers. PC Vekaria is due to celebrate his 30 years in service next year and I we are very lucky to have such an incredible public servant working for the Met and Londoners.”
