Developing tomorrow’s police managers: practical learning with a choice of dates
Two Police Oracle Training Academy webinars demonstrate how the programme supports officers with early career management development opportunities—with each event offered on four dates so subscribers can choose a session that suits them.
An officer’s first experience of leadership can come well before formal promotion. Supporting a student officer, providing constructive feedback and helping colleagues improve their performance all require skills that benefit from structured development.
The Police Oracle Training Academy supports that progression through practical learning for officers taking on responsibility for others. Its tutor constable and performance management webinars address two connected aspects of leadership: helping people develop and managing performance confidently.
Each webinar is available on four dates across October and November 2026, giving subscribers flexibility to fit their professional development around shifts, operational commitments and personal schedules.
The Role of Tutor Constable: Refresher and Introduction
The role tutor constables play in developing new officers cannot be under-estimated. It requires empathy and patience and high ethical standards. Yet, the standard of this training varies significantly from force to force, with some investing heavily into the time taken to bring a recruit up to standard, while others lag behind.
Tutoring also offers officers an opportunity to develop leadership skills while helping a new colleague translate their learning into operational practice.
This two-hour online workshop focuses on planning workplace learning, observing objectively and delivering feedback that improves performance, while balancing student development with operational safety. It is suitable for officers preparing to take on tutoring responsibilities and experienced tutor constables seeking a refresher.
These skills provide valuable foundations for future management responsibilities: communicating expectations, recognising development needs and helping others build confidence and competence.
Managing Police Officer Performance: Refresher Webinar
For officers moving into supervisory roles, managing performance is an essential capability. It should focus on driving team outcomes, maintaining standards, monitoring compliance, and supporting continuous professional development.
This interactive two-hour online workshop focuses on the Police (Performance) Regulations 2020 and the practical responsibilities of sergeants and inspectors. Built around a continuous case study, it explores formal performance procedures, including key Stage 1 supervisor decisions, drafting and escalation.
The session offers an opportunity for developing supervisors to strengthen their knowledge and for existing managers to refresh their approach.
