A driver who stopped on the M1 because her husband felt sick has been given safety advice by motorway police.

Officers responding to reports of a pedestrian on the carriageway between junction 16, near Northampton, and Watford Gap services found a BMW X5 stopped in the outside lane, and the man in the roadworks.

Police in Northamptonshire asked the woman to drive to the services five miles away and followed behind, giving her husband a lift.

Officers with the East Midlands operational support services, which includes Northamptonshire and Leicestershire police forces, then tweeted a picture of the vehicle after the incident on Sunday.

A Leicestershire Police spokeswoman said: "The incident happened in the roadworks, where there is currently no hard shoulder, but officers say that motorists must wherever possible pull in to an area of safety and should not just stop in the carriageway, as clearly that could cause an accident or tailbacks."
