Why Terrorism, Policing & Security?

Police are often the first line of defence against terrorist attacks, and the growing role of policing in counter-terrorism means new challenges for police officers. In both national and international circles, there is an increasing need for personnel to have a strong understanding of the interdisciplinary links between security and counter-terrorism.

Our postgraduate course in Terrorism, Policing and Security is designed to provide police officers with the necessary skills to help combat terrorism and international crime. Focusing on international security issues such as intelligence, military response and criminal justice, you will also analyse security closer to home and identify community policing's role in combatting radicalisation. Learn how policing theory, governance and policymaking connects to global security via distance learning to better understand the international policing community.

Training in terrorism and security goes hand in hand with policing studies. Benefit from the experience of the Liverpool Centre for Advanced Policing Studies, headed up by Sir Jon Murphy QPM, who have a wide network within the fields of policing, crime prevention, and security policy. During your postgraduate study, you will learn how to analyse the current issues facing the global police force, and the role of police intelligence to counter radicalisation and terrorism.

Who studies the MSc in Terrorism, Policing and Security?

This programme is designed for current and aspiring police officers and law enforcement professionals to develop their understanding of the security industry, defence policy, international crime, foreign policy, and the associated governmental and non-governmental institutions. It is also well suited for those in related sectors of international security and counter-terrorism, as well as academics looking to better understand the response against terrorism.

The course syllabus is designed to provide a comprehensive insight into the current issues facing the security industry and police forces. As the terrorist threat increases in numbers and complexity, professionals need a strong understanding of policework's role in counter-terrorism.

The course is available at Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, and Master of Science level. Those studying the PGCert will take the first three modules, whereas PGDip students will take the first six modules. Those choosing to study the course at MSc level have the opportunity to complete a dissertation on a topic of interest, allowing students to engage in an industry-focused research project to apply their knowledge and skills to their own career aspirations.
