The Metropolitan Police appeal for witnesses re a murder in Brixton
At approx. 23:00 police were called to
Brixton Water Lane, SW2 in response to a 999 call of a shooting incident. There
the officers found a man and woman with gunshot wounds in a car in Brixton Water
Lane near the junction with Arlingford Rd. Ambulance Service took both to a
south London hospital.
The 26 yr old man, who has now been formally
identified as Steven Daniel McCalla, aged 26 from Brixton, was pronounced dead
shortly after arrival. The 23 yr old woman remains in a stable
condition. A post mortem
was carried at Greenwich and the cause of death established to be from gunshot
wounds. It would appear that the couple were driving along Brixton Water Lane in
their silver VW Golf when the gunman stopped them. The dead man was driving with
the female in the passenger seat.
It is believed the gunman got out of an
X registered red Fiat Punto, carried out the shooting before returning to the
car and made off.
Officers from Operation Trident speaking at the scene
stated they were anxious to trace the red Fiat Punto car used in the
shooting.
DCI Duncan Wilson of the Metropolitan Police
said: "We need to hear from anyone who may know the whereabouts of the red Punto
now or who saw it making off shortly after the shooting at about 11pm on the
10th May 2001. What direction did it take? The information we have
suggests it went in the direction of Tulse Hill.
" We now think there
were three men in the Punto at the time of the shooting - the gunman and two
male suspects. "The gunman is believed to have been a black man in his
20s.
"But at this stage there is no description of the other two males
believed to have been in the car with the gunman."
He added: "On the
surface this shooting appears to have been a callous assassination. We are
keeping an open mind regarding the motive at this stage."
There have been
no arrests and enquiries continue.
An incident room has opened under DCI
Duncan Wilson of Operation Trident.
Anyone with information should call
the Incident Room on 020 8785 8563; if you wish to remain anonymous call
Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
