Superintendent's president praises the effectiveness of CCTV in preventing & detecting crime.

National President Kevin Morris welcomed the news that more money is to be spent on CCTV cameras, saying they prevent crime and make the public feel safer.

He said: ‘Cameras have been very useful in reducing the amount of crime on the streets in the areas where they have been placed, and they have also helped to detect crimes once they have been committed. People recognise that these camera systems are there to protect them, and so they feel safer when using the streets.

‘We do also have to be aware of the concerns of people who worry about civil liberties and make it quite clear that the rules under which they are used are fair and honest, and that the regulations are there to ensure that they are used properly.

’Displacement of crime can occur, but that actually helps the police, because we know then where to deploy officers. The local communities will decide where the cameras go; I know that many people in residential areas have asked for them. In partnership with the local authorities and members of the community we can put them in places that have the greatest impact for the public.’
