Cambridgeshire and West Mids police share best practice on the policing of diverse innner city areas.
Two Peterborough inspectors will be hosting a colleague from West
Midlands Police for three days this week as part of an exchange to share
best practice on the policing of ethnic communities.
Inspectors Steve
Selves, 43, and Steve Welby, 41, who jointly take responsibility for the
policing of Peterborough's Eastern sector (which includes the city centre)
will be joined by Inspector John Alder from Handsworth,
Birmingham.
Inspector Alder will be taking to the Peterborough streets
tomorrow, Tuesday 11th September, and staying until Thursday 13th when the
two Steves will be returning to Birmingham with him for a busy weekend in the
West Midlands.
"The purpose of the visit is to look at how we all
police areas with high numbers of ethnic minorities and exchange ideas and
best practice," explained Inspector Selves.
"Inspector Alder has a
great deal of experience in dealing with issues which are generated from
policing the ethnic minority community in Handsworth and we are keen to learn
from him. I am also sure that he will take home some new ideas from us on how
Peterborough's inner city areas are policed."
During the three day
visit to Peterborough Inspector Alder will be discussing the various
initiatives running in the West Midlands as well as learning about the
projects being progressed in Peterborough.
It is also hoped he will be
attending a meeting of Community Leaders on Tuesday at the Gladstone
Community Centre, where he will meet the Community Beat Managers for the
Gladstone area.
Inspector Alder said: "I am looking forward to coming to
Peterborough and will be explaining all about the initiatives we have running
in Handsworth. I am keen to learn from my colleagues about their projects and
experience and am particularly interested in the 'Open Out' reporting system
of racist incidents."
