Police, Customs and Trading Standards raid market for counterfeit media.

On 10 August, 2001, Paddy’s Market, situated directly behind Glasgow High Court was raided during a joint operation between City of Glasgow Trading Standards, Police and HM Customs.  A total of 509 infringing video cassettes were seized along with 650 infringing audio disks. One 35 year old man will appear in Glasgow Sheriff Court later this year in connection with the seizure.  This is the second Glasgow market raid in pursuance of FACT Scottish Senior Investigator, John McGOWAN’s Glasgow Market strategy which is intended to emulate his successful strategy in Edinburgh by ultimately making both Market Licence Issuers and Market Licence Holders more responsible for the goods sold in the markets and to introduce an element of self policing.  Following this raid, on Tuesday 14 August, Radio Clyde, a popular local radio station which covers Glasgow and its surrounding area ran a day long feature linked to all of its news bulletins, the theme of which was the damage counterfeiting inflicts to legitimate business along with examples of the British and foreign criminal groups who ultimately benefit from those who patronise counterfeiters.  John McGowan played the anchor role in this broadcast with contributions from public sector investigation agencies such as the Police, Trading Standards and Customs and Excise.  During the broadcast McGowan made no secret of the fact that counterfeiters in Glasgow can expect to see in increase in enforcement activity.  Several more raids have been planned with the ultimate intention of totally disrupting the viability of the illicit Christmas trade and enumerating the counterfeit product seized to present as evidence in objections to the renewal of certain Market Traders Licences.
