Police Numbers - cautious welcomeTue, May 22, 2001Source: Supt's AssocSupt's Assoc. warn about complacency.Police
numbers The increase in the
number of police recruits is welcome news – but should not spark a period of
complacency, the President warned recently. Chief Superintendent
Kevin Morris said the recent figures were encouraging but the Police Service
still faced a battle to retain trained officers and continue to attract high
quality recruits. He said: ‘Some forces now
appear to be doing really well in their recruitment drive but others are still
struggling. ‘Some forces do not know
how they are going to replace the hundreds of officers they expect to lose in
the next few years. ‘We cannot afford to sit
back. We must continue to work extremely hard to recruit and retain skilled
officers, particularly in a period of high employment when candidates might not
consider joining the Police Service where salaries remain a contentious issue.’
