The Home Office has announced the appointment of the new HM Chief Inspector of Probation.
The Home Office has announced the appointment of Professor
Rod Morgan as the new HM Chief Inspector of Probation.
Professor Morgan is Director of the Centre of
Criminology, Criminal Justice Faculty of Law at Bristol University. He was a
serving member of the Parole Board but relinquished his membership on taking up
his post as Chief Inspector. He has written a wide body of research on penal
affairs.
Announcing
the appointment the Home Secretary Jack Straw said:
"I am delighted that Professor Morgan has
accepted this appointment, which will take effect from 1 August this
year.
"Through his expertise and rigour of approach
the current Chief Inspector Sir Graham Smith and his team at the Inspectorate
have provided a major contribution to building a National Probation Service
capable of providing the highest standards of service.
"I am confident that Professor Morgan will
continue that tradition."
This post
was filled after open competition advertised in the national press and run under
Commissioner for Public Appointments guidelines. An Advisory Panel including two
independent assessors guided the Home Secretary in his choice. These were
Baroness Stern, former Director of the National Association for the Care and
Resettlement of Offenders and now senior research fellow at the International
Centre for Prison Studies; and Lord Laming, former Chief Inspector of the Social
Services Inspectorate and author of the report "Modernising the Management of
the Prison Service".
