In Devizes the Neighbourhood Policing Team will celebrate its second anniversary of Bluez 'n' Zuz discos with a Halloween themed event and it is hoped that there will be an even larger than normal turn out to help celebrate two very successful years.
The very first event saw 60 young people attend, however the events grew and now regularly attract over 250 young people, with a record set at Christmas 2008 of 316 attendees. As the events have expanded there have been live bands, karaoke nights, limbo nights, fancy dress and the most popular of all, foam parties.
Funding was provided by the District Council and Sarsen Housing Association. The events have been held in The Corn Exchange which is now known as the Merchants Suite, and is provided free of charge by Devizes Town Council.
As well as Police Officers and Community Support Officers, staff from Downlands School, Sarsen & Westlea Housing and Devizes Youth Service assist on the night. Downland School is also very supportive in assisting with promoting the events.
A supervised bus service follows a route around five villages which has enabled young people from rural areas to attend the event.
There have been numerous prizes given over the last two years including bikes, Play Station 3 & Xbox games consoles and mobile phones. On Thursday 29th there will be six prizes available to be won for best boy and girl fancy dress outfits and a free face painter & glitter tattoo artist.
In Salisbury the events have been held at the Salisbury City Football Club, who have kindly provided the venue free of charge for the last 18 months together with signed football shirts for prizes. The disco has also been provided free of charge by 'Dusk 2 Dawn Disco'.
Wilts and Dorset provided two free buses, supervised by Police Community Support Officers to help give reassurance to parents / guardians that their children can travel safely to and from the event.
Wiltshire Police are extremely grateful for all the assistance that Salisbury FC, Dusk 2 Dawn and Wilts & Dorset have given without which the events would not have been able to take place.
Due to the events gaining popularity and the numbers attending this is the last time the event will be held at the Football Club as it will be moving to The Chapel Night Club, Milford Street.
The last disco at Salisbury FC on Thursday 29th October will be a Halloween themed fancy dress party with fantastic prizes for the best costumes.
The Chapel Nightclub will host the next event which will take place on Wednesday 23rd December and more information will be released shortly.
A further event is being held in Marlborough at the Azuza nightclub on Friday 30th October which will also have a Halloween theme.
The events lead up to 'Not in my Neighbourhood week' (week commencing 2 November) which is a dedicated week focusing on showcasing the work Wiltshire Police, Wiltshire Council and other organisations do in partnership to help reduce anti-social behaviour and other crime. These events provide an excellent example of this partnership work.
Anyone who would like further information on the Bluez 'n' Zuz events across the county should contact their local Neighbourhood Policing Team on 0845 408 7000.
