With the Olympics only months away, the role the Special Constabulary will play in the largest peacetime policing operation in history is being finalised, the senior officer in charge of security has said.
Speaking to PoliceOracle.com following a joint exercise involving the Metropolitan Police and Royal Marines in preparation for the Games, National Olympic Security Co-ordinator AC Chris Allison said there would be around 320 special constables used per day as part and parcel of the policing operation in the Capital.
He also said that his ACPO colleagues in forces up and down the country are hoping to use volunteer officers to support the range of policing requirements linked with the sporting spectacle.
Training packages have been created to raise awareness of all officers involved in the policing of the Games. Those who do have specialist roles will receive specific detailed briefings.
AC Allison concluded: “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for all of us, and I know police officers will do their level best to ensure the Games pass off safely and securely. They will be the professionals they are day in, day out across this country.”
