Members of the public can now get an insight into the work of a volunteer police officer as North Yorkshire Police's first tweeting Special Constable signs up to Twitter.

Special Constable Jonathon Kenworthy, whose day job is an Events Business Manager for a social housing support company, gives his spare time freely to help police Selby's neighbourhoods.

He has signed up to Twitter so members of the public can gain an insight into his work as a Special Constable and also keep up to date with what's happening on Jonathon's beat.

SC Kenworthy said: "Volunteering for the police is a unique experience and provides many opportunities and situations which many people do not get to experience. It's an honour to serve the communities of Selby, and I hope members of the public find my updates on Twitter to be informative and useful."

Ch Insp Richard Anderson, Safer Neighbourhood Commander for the Selby District, said: "Twitter provides a quick and clear way to communicate with members of the public and keep them informed about what's going on in the community. This is also an opportunity to raise awareness of the valuable contribution which the Special Constabulary make to keeping our neighbourhoods safe and secure.

"Jonathon's enthusiasm for his work as a Special Constable is endless and we hope his tweets not only keep the community informed, but inspire others to consider volunteering for the police."

SC Kenworthy joined North Yorkshire Police's Special Constabulary in 2008 and has been based in Selby since then.
