Members of police authorities in the south-east of England have launched a scathing attack on Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary for comments in a controversial report.
In a statement, the Chairs of Hampshire, Sussex, Surrey, Kent and Thames Valley said they took “great exception” to remarks about police authorities’ ability to deliver on the value for money agenda, made in the HMIC Valuing the Police document.
While the members welcomed the comments condemning the raft of guidance documents in the report, they believed it was unfair for the government and other national agencies to lay the blame for shortcomings at the door of police authorities.
They also asserted that inspections had shown that authorities “at the very least” had been performing at a satisfactory level and are “well placed to protect community interests”.
Jacqui Rayment, Hampshire Police Authority Chair, added: “We have a responsibility to ensure that our local communities benefit from the most efficient and effective policing services.
“We feel that it is therefore unfair for the government and other national agencies to lay the blame for any shortcomings at our door,” she concluded. |
