Prolific 9 County Burglars Jailed
28-Aug-08
The Romanian burglars committed offences in Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire, Essex, Surrey, Leicestershire and Greater London...

Two prolific burglars who committed more than 60 burglaries in over 9 counties have been jailed for a total of 11 and half years, following a major investigation led by Hertfordshire Constabulary.

Stan Matei, 43 of Hillfield Road, Wembley and Mihai Strelcuic, also known as Antonio Scilimati, 33 of Belgraze Road, Birmingham, were sentenced to 6 years and 5 years 6 months respectively, following a hearing at St Albans Crown Court.

At an earlier hearing, Matei pleaded guilty to 45 burglaries, while Strelcuic admitted to 16 burglaries. Both men committed offences in Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire, Essex, Surrey, Leicestershire and Greater London.

In Hertfordshire, Tring, Sawbridgeworth and Bricket Wood were targeted.

Both men were finally arrested and charged following forensic tests.

Following their sentencing, a recommendation was made for them to be deported back to their home county Romania, once they have served their prison sentences.

Detective Sergeant Paul Hedges from the County Prolific Offender Team said: “These sentences conclude a major investigation involving several police forces from the South of England. The actions of Matei and Strelcuic caused misery, disruption and unnecessary inconvenience for many people and I am pleased these men have been convicted and are behind bars. I hope this result sends a clear message that Hertfordshire Constabulary deals robustly with those who break the law and that we will work together with our partners to ensure offenders are brought to justice.”

DS Hedges continued: “I am very grateful for the co-operation, hard work and support by all the police forces involved which has helped achieve this positive result.”

Following the sentencing, both men were handed an order under the Proceeds of Crime Act (2002). Matei was given an order for £102,000 while Strelcuic was given an order for £18,000. As no assets have been identified to fulfil these orders, they will stay with the men for the rest of their lives. If the men later acquire assets, officers can look to seize these as part of the order.
