Police Increase Door Staff Professionalism
13-May-08
Gwent Police are working with door staff on strategies to increase both their visibility and professionalism...

Door staff in Newport City Centre, Gwent will wear new fluorescent armbands containing their professional identity cards.

Police in Newport set up the initiative to answer concerns that some door staff are not identifiable to the public, or are not properly registered. The bright yellow armbands, which will be introduced this weekend, display Security Industry Authority (SIA) identity cards. Any door staff not displaying their identity card will be deemed unregistered and made to stop working immediately.

Officers believe the new armbands will make people enjoying a night out feel safer by knowing they can approach professional door staff.

PC Rachael Honey, licensing officer for Newport, has worked in partnership with city centre pubs and clubs to introduce the armbands. She said:
"This new initiative will solve so many problems late at night in the city centre. Firstly, people will be able to tell the difference between door staff and customers gathered outside premises. The high-visibility armbands give the door workers a professional image and anyone who feels threatened on a night out will be able to approach them for help. Door staff have close contact with the police and they will call us immediately in the event of any trouble."

Door workers in Newport City Centre are able to contact the police through their radio systems and they want people to feel they can approach them in problem situations.

Asher Rashid, area manager of Pro-guard Security who provide door staff for Revolution, Page and Glitterball, said:
"These high-visibility armbands are a great idea and will hopefully change the negative image door staff have had in the past. Customers who feel threatened or hassled in any way can approach us by looking for the armbands, which glow both inside and outside venues.
The armbands protect door workers against false allegations too, because they can be clearly seen by the CCTV cameras in the city centre. They will also deter potential troublemakers from misbehaving."

Revolution's deputy manager Dave Wallbank added:
"These armbands will clearly identify our door staff and make the public feel more relaxed and safe knowing they are around. We fully support this police scheme and we appreciate the hard work they have put in to get it going. The armbands display the door workers' ID cards and give them a more professional image."
