A paedophile who escaped justice for eight years has become the first person to be extradited from China to the UK.

Teacher David Price will be sentenced later after admitting 21 charges of possessing and distributing indecent images of children.

He was tracked down after an international search involving years of judicial and diplomatic negotiations.

The 69-year-old was initially identified by a police officer from the United States who was pretending to be a sex offender online.

From his home in Southport, Merseyside, Price offered to supply him with indecent images and to arrange travel to the United Arab Emirates so he could abuse children.

Police found Price sitting at his computer and discovered shocking images of him with children.

But after fraudulently obtaining a passport, he fled initially to India, then to Kenya and Tanzania, before heading to China where he got a job teaching children.

But even after his whereabouts had been revealed, it took another six years to bring him to justice.

China and the UK do not have an extradition treaty - but the transfer was eventually secured through a diplomatic agreement.

In 2011, the fugitive was arrested by police in the Chinese province of Hubei.

It took a further seven months before British police officers were able to fly to China to bring Price back.
