Belper policing section now has a new Inspector as part of Derbyshire Constabulary's 'Closing the Risk Gap' strategy. Inspector Richard Smith took charge of policing in Belper on Thursday, 24th July, replacing Inspector Graham Lamin. Inspector Smith is currently in charge of policing in Ripley, but his new role will see him take overall charge of policing throughout Amber Valley when the full merge takes place in the autumn to include Alfreton.

The move is part of 'Closing the Risk Gap', which involves structural changes to improve the level of service to residents and visitors to the county. Some policing sections are being merged to reduce the number of managers but frontline staffing will remain the same. No police stations in the county will close and the Inspector for the area will spend all his or her time focusing on community policing. There will also be extra Inspectors who will provide a 24/7 reactive response on spontaneous incidents. There will be more staff dedicated to public protection, domestic violence, and to child abuse, and a more concerted attack on some of the real problems that face Derbyshire around serious and organised crime. Inspector Richard Smith said: "I'm looking forward to the challenges presented by taking over policing in the whole of the Amber Valley area and I hope that these changes will help us to deliver a more collaborative policing service. "Belper section will be receiving extra police officers and PCSOs, as well as additional support from other Amber Valley officers. We will be continuing to concentrate on issues at the heart of the Belper neighbourhood to make the area an even safer place to live and work." |
