The Police Medal recognising long service will now be issued to those who have served for 20 years, rather than 22, the Home Office announced this week.
The award now fits in with other emergency services and will be back-dated to 19th January, 2010.
Having campaigned for many years on this issue, Police Federation Chair, Paul McKeever says: “The Federation is delighted that the qualifying age has been reduced to 20 years and we thank the Policing Minister and Home Secretary for listening to us and pursuing the matter.”

Dear Sir,
ReplyReport this commentI too am glad that the service to receive this medal has been reduced to 20 years service for the police. However I am dismayed as to why the it is only back datyed to the 19th January 2010, surely it should have been backdated further as I completed 21 1/2 years exemplary service retiring on the 18th April 2004 from Strathclyde Police. This brings into context that when the Queens Jubilee was at first to be granted to those ex service men and women who had susequently joined the police service and had five or more years service from there armed service time were the only ones to be granted that medal. Subsequently this was over ruled thankfully, so come on think of all the Police Constables who retired for whatever reason to being considered for the Police Long Service Medal. After all they all gave up part of their lives to serve a gratfull community where ever they served.

I did1 year as a cadet and then 21 years as an officer and was retired on ill health grounds (injury related) in 1996. My injury/illness prevented me from completing the then required 22 years.
ReplyReport this commentI would contest that failure to backdate the award further may be disability discrimination.
