The Metropolitan Police has confirmed it is reviewing its computer processes after accidentally disclosing the email addresses of more than 1,000 crime victims.

In a statement, the Force confirmed that the details had been shared with other victims after a slip-up with the email system relating to the Crime Recording and Investigation Bureau.

A survey was being emailed out to ensure victims were “receiving a better service as part of the MPS creation of a single telephone investigation unit for London” when they mishap happened, the statement said.

The Force added: “In total 1,136 emails were sent out in seven batches of between 119 and 198 recipients – but because the addresses were put in the wrong box they were visible to the other recipients in the batch.

“No other personal details were revealed and we are contacting everyone affected to explain and to apologise. We are also reviewing our processes in relation to surveys of this kind to minimise the risk of similar mistakes being made in the future.

“As a matter of course we have notified the Information Commissioner's Office.”
