Eagle-Eyed Officers Are Rewarded

A vivid snapshot of life at the sharp end of law enforcement is captured by some striking entries in this year’s Police Photographer of the Year competition.

Winners of the contest, which is organised by the NPIA and aims to promote excellence behind the lens, showed outstanding talent and artistic ability.

First place went to Neil Kitson, of West Yorkshire Police, for Nightwatch, a depiction of officers at the front line of the night time economy, while the second slot was claimed by Hampshire Constabulary’s Brian Platt for Nissan Micra Light Landing, a stark image of an abandoned vehicle.

Immediate Response – an extraordinary picture of life on the streets from a behind-the-wheel perspective – earned James Gartrell, of Sussex Police, third place.

Meanwhile Stuart Brown – serving with Leicestershire Constabulary – took first place in the Crime Scene Photographer of the Year award for his Fingerprint Development image.

The winners of the competition, which was sponsored by Nikon, are receiving digital SLR cameras while compact cameras are being handed to the runners’ up.

They will receive their prizes during a special ceremony at Durham Castle.
