Cannibal Chef 'Was Groomed'
13-Oct-08
The man claims diminished responsibility in a trial over a 'terrible, horrific and bizarre killing'...

A chef accused of murdering a man before cooking and seasoning bits of him was groomed and raped as a teenager, a court heard.

Jurors heard 36-year-old former Mr Gay UK Anthony Morley was raped by an older man when he was just 17.

Morley, giving evidence for the first time in the case, said he had admired his attacker in a “fatherly” way.

He also told the jury he was not gay at the time he won the Mr Gay UK title in 1993.

Morley said in a low voice: “I was adventuring ideas towards these lines but I had a steady girlfriend at the time.

“I knew her very well and we were good friends and lovers.

“I always had thoughts around the time but nothing big like 'that’s it I want to be gay’. They were ideas.”

The defence case claims Morley, of Harehills, Leeds, was not in a fit state of mind and was provoked when he stabbed Damian Oldfield, 33.

Morley then slit his throat before cutting off chunks of his leg and chest and chewing a piece.

Mr Oldfield’s naked body was found on Morley’s bedroom floor in the early hours of April 24.

Trained chef Morley had cooked Mr Oldfield a meal before the two men went to the bedroom then had sex.

Speaking for Morley, Richard Smith QC told the court the defendant had “diminished responsibility” for the “terrible, horrific and bizarre killing”.

Referring back to when Morley was allegedly raped as a teen, he said: “Anthony Morley did not know from that day to the day he killed Damian Oldfield whether he was homosexual or heterosexual.

“The man who raped him ceased contact with the defendant 12 years ago but was named by him to the police when Anthony Morley surrendered himself."

The trial continues.
