Borris Johnson Outlines Policing Vision

Boris Johnson is set to take control of Scotland Yard's watchdog just days after ousting Sir Ian Blair.

The London Mayor said he will outline his vision for the force at his first meeting of the Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA).

Mr Johnson has said he is in no hurry to replace Sir Ian Blair and has urged Home Secretary Jacqui Smith likewise and not to rush into appointing a new Metropolitan Police Commissioner.

Instead, the Mayor said he wants to work alongside Ms Smith in the shortlisting and final interviews of any candidates for the job.

Today, Mr Johnson will be joined by his policing deputy Kit Malthouse as he meets the other 21 members at City Hall.

Deputy Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson was expected to take Sir Ian's place to present a report on the latest police performance.

It will include information on the biggest challenges facing the Met for new members of the authority.

Sir Paul will outline how officers are tackling a wave of teenage murders, as well as other issues including organised crime and terrorism.

Mr Johnson has ordered swingeing changes to the structure of the police authority and to how meetings are conducted.

The Mayor wants the majority of business to be conducted through committees with the high-profile monthly full meetings focusing on big issues and performance.
