21 1/2 Years For Robberies
23-Nov-09
Flying Squad investigate as accused target bookmakers, post offices and CIT across the south of England...

Two men who committed a string of robberies across the south of England have been sentenced to a total of 21 1/2 years in prison.

At the Inner London Crown Court, Anthony Perry, 31, was sentenced to 11 years in prison having pleaded guilty to nine counts of robbery.

His accomplice Fabian Dawson, 29, had been sentenced to 10 years six months in prison at the same court on Friday 29 May.

The convictions are the culmination of an investigation by detectives from the Flying Squad at Tower Bridge, who worked with colleagues across London, Bristol, Basingstoke, Leamington Spa and Cheltenham.

Perry was arrested after a photograph of him - where he had cigarettes tucked behind his ears - was issued to the public. He handed himself in to police several days after it was published.

The 12 raids committed by Perry and Dawson primarily targeted bookmakers, but also included cash-in-transit guards and a post office. The pair stole more than £30,000 in their four month crime spree.

Anthony Lee Perry of no fixed address and Fabian Dawson of Druid Street, SE1 both pleaded guilty in May to conspiracy to rob, in relation to the offences against bookmakers and cash in transit guards and to the robbery at Tewkesbury Road Post Office, Cheltenham.

Detective Sergeant Mark Murdoch, from the Flying Squad based at Tower Bridge, said: "Without doubt the convictions and substantial sentences handed down to Perry and Dawson means that people working in the bookmaker and cash-in-transit industries are safer.

"It is sometimes thought that these types of offence are victimless, but this is not the case. Although no weapons were used in these robberies those targeted in these crimes often suffered physical and mental injuries and as a result found it difficult to return to work.

"The Flying Squad is a committed and successful team who will continue to work with other Forces and the relevant industries to capture those people involved in this type of crime."

The robberies began on 25 July 2008 at a bookmakers on Rotherhithe New Road where two men entered the premises at 20:30hrs. They forced their way into the counter area and stole more than £1,500 in cash.

On 30 July 2008 at 18:53hrs, two men entered the bookmakers at Fellbrig House, Dog Kennel Hill, London, SE27. Both went to the toilet area and then forced their way into the counter area and stole £300 in cash.

On 31 July 2008 at 16:10hrs two men entered the bookmakers in Southwark Bridge Road, London, SE16. The suspects pushed the staff member as she opened the secure counter area and stole £1000 in cash.

On 4 August 2008 at 18:20hrs two men entered a bookmakers in Salmon Lane, London, E14. They asked for the keys to the toilets and then at an opportune moment forced entry to the counter area and stole £500 in cash. During this offence a firearm was intimated to the staff in the shop but was not seen.

On 23 August 2008 at 16:50hrs two men entered a bookmakers in Moravian Road, Kingswood, Bristol. They went to the toilet area and then left the shop and five minutes later entered. One suspect jumped over the counter and threatened staff and forced them to open the tills and the safe. The other suspect guarded the front door. They made off with around £4,500 in cash.

On 1 September 2008 at 15:25hrs two men entered the William Hills Bookmakers in Gipsy Road, London, SE27. They forced their way into the counter area by kicking open the secure door and the stealing £1,000 in cash from the tills and by forcing staff to open the gaming machines.

On 5 September 2008 at 13:00hrs two men entered a bookmakers in Fishponds Road, Bristol. The suspects went into the toilet area and then came out into the middle of the shop. At this point the defendant jumped over the counter and kicked a staff member in the face. He then forced them to open the tills and when staff refused to open the till he threatened them by saying "Do you want some violence?" The suspects then made off with £700 in cash. Once again the accomplice from the other offences was in attendance watching the door to the premises.

On the 2 October 2008 at 10:29hrs a man entered a bookmakers on The Pavement, London, SW4. As staff exited the counter area he used this opportunity to force entry to the secure area and stole cash from the tills, which totalled £220.

This part of the report details the events around three attacks on Cash in Transit custodians and one offence of robbery at a Post Office

On 5 September 2008 at 14:40hrs two men entered the Tewkesbury Road Post Office, Tewkesbury Road, Cheltenham. The two men waited in the shop and at a time when the door to the Post Office area was insecure Dawson forced his way into the counter area and proceeded to rifle through the drawers to obtain cash. He also asked the staff to open the safe, which they were unable to do. Whilst in the Post Office area a member of the public realised what was happening and held the Post Office door shut in an attempt to stop the suspect escaping. At this point Perry ran from the front of the shop and forced the door open to allow his accomplice to escape. Both men then made off from the shop. They made off with £4,235 in cash.

On 16 September at 16:30hrs in Basingstoke at the Homebase, Winchester Road, Basingstoke a cash in transit custodian was delivering to the Homebase store when he was attacked in the store area as he was walking from the store. The robber took the box and ran off to a waiting car, a silver Vauxhal Vectra.

On 2 October 2008 at 15:15hrs at Shires Retail Park a robbery of a cash in transit guard took place.
