Topic: DC Stephen Oake Posted: 03 November 2006 at 2:51pm |
DC Stephen Oake article published on the Dorset Echo.
The chairman of Dorset Police Federation is so incensed at the government's reluctance to honour a murdered police officer with the George Cross that he is returning his two medals to Tony Blair in disgust.
Clive Chamberlain says he will no longer feel proud or comfortable wearing the Long Service and Golden Jubilee medal he was awarded for his policing service and has decided to send it to the Prime Minister in protest. It's an absolute disgrace that Stephen Oake was not given the medal. People like Blair who live cocooned against any aggro, have no idea what it is like being a Police Officer. Blair goes everywhere with an armed escort and has no perception of danger. Blair stated that he could not intervene in this case, it's never stopped him poking his nose into anything else, the man's a whimp.

Stephen Oake gave his life for his colleagues and the public he served. By any standard he was a hero insofar as heroes rarely set out to be such and "are just doing their jobs". I was shocked and embarassed that this country declined to recognise his heroism - not just for him but for his family, who lost so much more than we can understand, and for his colleagues.
I wonder if, on the back of the Dorset Federation Chairman's action, now is the time for the Police Federation to initiate a petiton supporting a public request for an award to DC Oake. I think there might be influential people around who would support this. Perhaps there might be other ways of shaming the government - a mass return of long service medals (I'm an ex-Met special and I would be happy to join any mass medal return).
I really do feel strongly about this - particularly as I now live in Manchester and, as such, Stephen Oake was discharging his sworn duty for the people of this city. I will be happy to support any action and seek support for a petition if this is considered an appropriate way forward.

I think it only strengthens an argument that the whole rewards system needs to be looked at again.
I have no doubt this officer should be posthumously recognised for his heroic actions but in addition there are others out there who through the bravery they display day in and day out, deserve reward and recognition.
Remember the point when we were not even going to receive the Jubilee Medal, then the decision was made to give it to those who had served five years or more?
And why is that that honours such as the QPM are for the most the preserve of senior officers many of whom have had a charmed life and never faced and angry many.
To wait 22 years for a good conduct and long service medal is pathetic and needs reviewing as does the dishing out of medals just because of rank.
Americans soldiers have a Purple Heart for those injured in combat, imagine if we had a similar award, I for one would be stuck to the spot with the weight of the metal..... and I'm not alone!
We live in a time where for example brave firearms officers who make split second life or death decisions are not recognised as hero's they are demonsied......time for a re-think, I think!!

Have you noticed that none of the present cabinet have ever served in HM Forces. They have all lead cushy lives as students, then agitators, then at Uni, then as MP's, so they know nothing about facing danger. The only danger most have faced, is the rush to the House of Commons bar, or canteen, when they may get bumped aginst by another MP. Nearly all the cabinet have a dubious past, Hewitt and Harman NCCL dipsticks, Reid ex communist and alcoholic, Hain, always in student riots, they all sailed close to the wind for years, now look at them, they think they are pillars of society.

But who else is there to vote for?
I seriously think we should start our own party.
I'm going to be public and say the the BNP have some pretty good ideas on crime but then the rest of their policies are mad.
They pledge that citizens would be trained to use SA-80 assault rifles and can use the (I quote) to shoot illeagal immigrants at dover, if they wish!
Pemby/ Graham...please
Start your own political Party. Everyone would sign up and vote for you.
But to the main heading of this topic. May DC Oake rest in peace and attain the recognition he so rightfully deserves.

To put this in perspective, DC Oakes was a committed Christian as are his family. None of them would expect any postumous recognition of the sacrifice he made. Postumous awards only benefit the living. They mean nothing to the dead. He did however, sacrifice his life unexpectedly and without prejudice. It would be good for his family and the rest of us for this to have some significant recognision.
We're looking for a feeling government. Are you really hoping for that?
Best wishes,
Cotlake

Cotlake Don't expect anything from this Government, theyd don't understand what bravery is. Stephen Oake died trying to protect other officers who were present. It wasn't as if he was just stabbed in the back not realising what was going on. I think he should be given the highest award possible to reflect the sacrifice he made. You cannot give more than your LIFE. The people who decide these awards are faceless civil servants who don't know the meaning of the word danger.

I agree Maverick22, but that wasn't my point. Please understand I'd like/expect Stephen's bravery to be recognised if only for the sake of our organisation. probably a fat hope of that!
Best wishes,
Cotlake
