PC Neil Bloomfield of the Hampshire Constabulary claims he was singled out for wearing his gold ear stud purely because he is homosexual.  He told an industrial tribunal in Southampton that male colleagues who were not homosexual had flouted the rule without reprisal.

He claims he was branded a 'crusader' and a 'faggot' by one supervisory officer, bullied by colleagues and threatened with suspension after complaining about his treatment.

The officer who works as a special branch contacts officer in Portsmouth, states that several other colleagues had 'slipped under the radar' while wearing banned jewellery on duty.  This included the force's director of personnel, Maureen Adamson, who wore a pair of large gold hooped earrings, he said.

Another example quoted was where a 'straight' male colleague was allowed to wear a tongue stud while others wore nose rings, heavy gold earring and even eyebrow piercings.

It would appear that Hampshire have a rule forbidding male staff from wearing jewellery in a drive to improve dress standards, and also if the wearer or others were in places where the could face danger of harm.

Female officers may wear a small pair of stud earings.

Nose piercings may be worn only on cultural or religious grounds and no other body piercing is permitted.

The tribunal continues.

Is it any wonder that the public has a largely negative view of the Police at the moment when reading stories like this.  Granted, if this Officer was treated as he suggests; then that is entirely unacceptable.  But I simply can't imagine a supervisory Officer using terms like 'faggot' towards a fellow Officer.  What is as equally disturbing though is the apparent wearing of ear-rings etc. by several male Officers, whether gay or not, whilst on duty.  Whatever happened to standards?  I'm all for an inclusive service and though I'm might be a touch old fashioned in some respects; I nevertheless think the wearing of such jewelery on duty is not becoming of the high standards of a Police Officer.  Simply put, anyone who wishes to make a fashion statement should perhaps try a different profession all together.  Is it me, or do they simply not make 'em like they used to?

I've always thought that ear-rings & ear-studs were an accident waiting to happen, let alone nose & lip piercings.

They're unfortunately likely to increase the level of physical damage sustained during a struggle, as well as causing a high degree of distraction through pain.

I don't necessarily think that he should be ALLOWED to wear an earring simply because he's gay. However, by the same token if he was the only officer to be challenged, then that's clearly wrong.

I think one issue of concern is that the officer involved is reported as wanting to wear the earring to indicate his sexuality! Am I being cynical or does this mean that he was making a statement of his preferences in order to attract like-minded individuals - does this mean his mind was more on "cruising" and less on duty?

Hampshire caved in.....

Surely this is a health and safety at work issue?

Looks like we should start a lobby over hair length inequality. Could we also please be allowed to wear a skirt / kilt instead of trousers in 'hot' summer months? I'd also like to be able to carry a handbag whilst on foot patrol.....

Since when did the wearing of an ear ring indicate homosexuality?

I am in total agreement with MoreK54...maybe if he feels that strongley about it, he should try working somewhere where he can wear an ear ring without it being so totally wrong.  And if it is a 'symbol' of his Gayness ( if there is such a word ) then maybe we hetrosexuals should start wearing T-shirts with ' Straight and proud of it' written across it.  No you're all right, it would not be allowed.

It may be a cynical view but we all know how the force, whichever it is, will react when confronted with anything controversal whether it be about religion, race or sexuality and therefore this Officer saw too good an opportunity to miss.

I cannot believe at all in any way that in today's climate where you have to think, then re-think every word you utter in the work environment that any Officer especially a more senior one, would use the word 'faggot'.
It's a 2 year cycle and on each cycle the job just gets worse!!

I am desparate to avoid gay stereotyping and cliches, but when I hear that this chap was so upset about his precious stud he was planning to claim compensation for "hurt feelings", it does make me smile.

I see that the result of the agreement is to remain 'confidential'.........er........

He continues to wear the earring = He won

He doesn't wear the earring = They won

Or am I missing something?

Come now! We're none too keen on having cannibals posting on this forum.

I think it'd might be very worrying for you though, if you did eat him & you belched afterwards. There'd be two voices saying "Pardon."

I didn't mean to offend anyone....I have really good mates who are.      What's the big deal with earrings anyway? I think they're cool...like my lip labret which I put in and take out whenever. I think I'm going to turn veggie.

What ever happened to the class of person called POLICE ? This job of ours is a disciplined service and, at times, we have no choice but to get down and dirty. We protect the public and ourselves, impartially and professionally.........so what the heck is Pc Niel Bloomfield all about ?

I can imagine him sat at home thinking 'Im gay, Im proud and if I want to flout the rules I will anyway, they wouldnt dare challenge a gay man'

What a total insult to all those who are gay, who do not make it common knowledge in the work place because it really isnt relevant. It is people such as this that bring issues to the surface and prompt others into predujice.

Who knows how many associates have unusual preferrences behind closed doors ? The answer is, who cares until the matter is rammed down your throat. Then it forces a personal opinion.

As for Pc Bloomfield and his obvious issues, Im damn sure I wouldnt want to be stood next to him in a serious disorder situation if he is going to cry every time someone is 'Nasty' to him. Buck up or ship out mate, your doing no-one any favours.

I think the issue here is that he feels like he's been singled out and I can complete understand that.

I'm not Gay but have been treated differently from other colleagues.  I don't quite know why this is and as a result haven't bothered to make complaints etc.

I applaud the PC for making a stand but think and his sexuality shouldn't be an issue.  What difference does it make to what he wears to work?

Well, that is the whole point.... he shouldn't be wearing earrings because they aren't part of the dress code.

In fact I don't understand why women are allowed to wear them and men not; I think they should be banned. But that's another story.

It's like me walking in work in high heels then complaining when I get pulled up on it and spouting on about female rights, and how, because I'm a female, I should be allowed to wear heels.

This bloke should have accepted the dress code when he first started and if he doesn't like it, tough! The uniform is there for a reason... to make everyone the same regardless of age, gender, race, sexuality etc.

I also argued that the progressive-regressive method is sensitive to temporality and the constitutive role of individual praxis.

Well said LucyJoLookalike!  At the end of the day as you have said, He is a member of the disciplined service, and if his Boss says "No", then "No" it is!

What is this about "I should be allowed to wear heels"?  Are you a bit on the small side - I don't mean that disrespectfully?

I found wearing high heels made the back of my legs ache, plus it was difficult to ride a motorcycle wearing them.LOL
