Topic: Just getting it off my chest.... Posted: 12 May 2006 at 1:24pm |
I HATE….
I hate the politicians that call themselves police officers.
I hate being called a racist.
I hate the fact that the public want us to turn up in seconds and then moan when they see us breaking the speed limit.
I hate the paperwork and the endless duplication of information.
I hate the “just out of probation” trainee detective constable teaching me to suck eggs.
I hate the PC’s that are too scared to do the job who hide in offices like the Management Information Unit or the Borough Intelligence Units
I hate the fact the recruitment standards have been lowered to let any old 4 foot 9 19 year old in the job.
I hate being told by the courts and defence briefs that being abused and assaulted are all part of the job.
I hate not being able to defend myself and my colleagues when the press accuse us of doing something wrong.
I hate journalists who don’t get their facts right and the senior officers that let it happen.
I hate the yobs on the corner as much as you do.
I hate the fact that Tony Blair keeps passing laws that don’t work.
I hate the fact that he brought in Penalty Notices for Disorder to tackle teenage yobs in the street without having to arrest them, when we can’t even issue them to under 18’s!
I hate the National Crime Reporting Standards.
I hate the CID who can’t be bothered.
I hate drug dealers and rapists.
I hate the targets set by people who have never seen the things that I have seen.
I hate the fact that it can take two hours to book in a prisoner.
I hate people who call the police for no reason other than they can’t resolve their own arguments like adults.
I hate it when the Scenes of Crime officers don’t find any fingerprints.
I hate the fact that our uniform is unfit for the purpose and scruffy…and I hate the helmet…!
I hate the amount of resources put into policing football matches…and the people who can’t behave themselves…
I hate the senior officers that are more interested in cannabis detections and Sec 5 tickets than fighting proper crime.
I hate the fact that drug addicts are seen as victims.
I hate the idea of PCSO’s.
I hate the fact that we are called a service and not a force.
I hate having my duties changed 4 times in a week.
I hate the fact that me and my mates are fighting a losing battle.
But I will still do this job because I love it and it’s people like me and my mates who keep the streets from erupting in flames….

Which is why we will keep getting shafted by the goverment and ACPO. They know that when things start to go wrong we will cope and make it work. If we let it go tits up ( sorry for the gender specific comment ) they would have to address issues, but we don't , we cope, and we do it because it would be the public who suffer and we have pride, integrity and contrary to popular belief, we do actually care.

I hate the fact that...
I've got a person on bail for handling a £30k stolen vehicle, it's a really good job and they are getting charged, but...
...I may as well have saved my time and energy and arrested someone for swearing in the street, 'cos in the great balance sheet of detections it all comes to the same!
Quality not stats...

Hmmm. I agree with all of your points, except this one. I work in an intel unit (albeit with a unique and vastly proactive remit). One of my colleagues in there has 28 years service and has recieved innumerable commendations for bravery including trying to save a colleague who was murdered.
In addition, your intimation that I am too scared to do the job is fairly offensive - I go out on the streets almost daily (in plainclothes, I am a DC), turning scrotes over and happily assisting local reliefs with mundane calls if I am nearby. I will always go to any assistance shouts (including 'vans on the hurry up') if I am nearby. One of the main reasons I agree with the majority of your moans is because I KNOW what each of them means!!!!!!!!
If you are in the Met, please dont hesitate to PM me, and I'll give you a quick rundown of how scared I have been over the past year to arrest dozens of crime bodies, conduct dozens of proactive jobs, undertake dozens of stops, and assist dozens of colleagues. As I will continue to do so, in my intel unit role.

It was not my intention to offend anyone but i didn't come up with these views over night, these are my experiences of the job so far.
I have worked in two of Londons BOCU's and that is my experience of BIU's. They seem to be full of civilians and advanced drivers who don't go out. I have never known anyone who works on a BIU who goes out and turns people over etc...you are obviously in the minority and it's nice to know that a) someone in the BIU actually goes out on the street and b) that a borough based DC does it!
If the BIU you work for has a proactive element to it then thank god someone in charge out there has the vision to see that people need to be on the street and not creating pretty briefing room posters and maps whilst sitting behind a desk, because that it is my experience of BIU's as a response officer. I can be off for four days and come back and see the same briefing that i saw before i went off. The office is always locked so you can's get to the premsearch book our anything else on nights, people only work 8-4's and the occasional late turn and they don't work weekends. Does the intelligence cycle stop during these periods? No
Just to defend myself a little bit, i didn't say all PC's that work in the BIU are scared and lazy i just hate the one's who are! You must know some and you surely know where i am coming from...there are lazy people in all branches
And if all was well in the land of BIU’s then why is the Commish’ “modernise” them in the service review?
I don’t want to argue with you as this was just a way for me to get things that I hate about the job of my chest. I am sure there are PCSO’s and politicians out there who would have something to say about the other statements on the post. I am sure that as a DC you have lots to say about the woodies…

I HATE
-
Political correctness and the obsessions it generates
-
To see ambitious yet incompetent toadies getting promoted
-
The way the Federation has been turned from toothless tiger to obedient little pussy cat by an overbearing and authoritarian government
-
Bad English, spelling, punctuation and grammar by police colleagues. We're supposed to be professionals.
-
The Home Office and the whole "Police Reform" thing
-
The government mucking about with the Police Pension Scheme
-
The Big Brother state that is being created in this country, and especially the whole concept of compulsory identity cards and the National Identity Register that will treat law-abiding people like criminals and cost the nation a fortune while doing nothing to defeat terrorism, crime, ID theft and other social ills.

I work in an office - I am not scared to do the job having spent 27 years as a constable on patrol. However, now i am approaching retirement, injuries take an awful long time to heal and I want to collect my pension for a long time after I retire in 13 months time.
What do I do?
I work in a Control Room telling police officers what to do., using my experience and knowledge to ake sure that the public get the correct response and that you officers still on the street stay safe!!

Carrot Chomper;
"I may as well have saved my time and energy and arrested someone for swearing in the street, 'cos in the great balance sheet of detections it all comes to the same!"
As a CID type I am right with you there; if we can get the evidence, can get the CPS to prosecute and can get the job to court and if the CPS lawyer can be arsed to read the casepapers, it's all the same really isn't it?
I think our bean counters couldn't give a damn if a job falls apart at court, 'cos it is a charge and sanctioned dectection; so they don't care and pile more rubbish in my in-tray (forgetting the CPS will send urgent case memo's and other bizzare trash to inform their decision to take a ple from Johhny sl*g at court).
So after the job is paraded before the muppets on the bench and they make their stupid decision, who has to face the uniformed arresting officers and the victims and try and make sesnse of what happened? The officer in the case.
Having worked in a BIU, (and worked hard I would like to say) I can't stand the fact that the BIU where I work appears to be a place for the bods from CID that no one else wants; rather than the point of the spear. Having brought forward what I thought was a fairly good little proposal to get directed non-intrusive survelliance which I would have run (and thus not inconvenienced them at all), it got junked without a proper consideration.
Yep, it is much more proportionate to ensure the cameras stay in the cupboard collecting dust than be out on a criminal's front door, and my little empire is unchallenged.
Mind you, I am now a Community Safety Unit officer. You think;
I hate people who call the police for no reason other than they can’t resolve their own arguments like adults
Think what my day is like

As a civvy driver I HATE the extra paperwork that has been generated over the past few years, I cary more and more of it on a daily basis. The older among you will remember that when computors first became the norm (yes kids, there was life before computors) they would cut down on paper usage, give us all more leisure time and create the paperless office. I have nothing against computors, it's the dickheads who attach a bloody printer to them. yet another "well done" to IT services, I don't think.

The CPS are the generators of paper work, all those MG Forms, they could do away with half of them, but they need to justify their existance, so they just produce more. Un-disclosed evidence should be shredded. The defendant should be made to disclose his defence arguements prior to the case, at least two weeks in advance.

I hate the fact we don't have an overtime budget, decent equipment, IT resources, admin support, yet every March, loads of money gets spent on new brabantia dustbins at £40 each and other such rubbish we don't need, to make sure the budget doesn't get reduced next year.
I hate policing to figures not crime.
I hate explaining to genuine victims why the cps won't run their case.
I hate pandering (no pun) to people who don't deserve my time and short changing people who do deserve time that I can't afford.
I love it when just sometimes, the good guys win

PNDs can only be issued for Sec 5 and if there is any evidence of a more serious offence or group action, then a PND is not valid. We have had several knocked back by the Compliance Unit at Ivory Towers that have been issued in similar circumstannces.. Perhaps an anonymous tip-off to HMIC would stop that practice? It's cheating the system and cheating the public. If people are fighting in the street, they should be charged, not given a ticket.

I hate the ones that winge about everything and everyone without really looking too far into what some of these departments do.
From some of the replies, you seem to have offended quite a lot of peeps. A lot of older PC's nearing retirement have already earned their spurs and don't need people like you criticising them. Sure there are postings that are cushy and some lazy ones that magnetically migrate to them, but there are also good hard working officers, with genuine injuries sustained in being brave and serving their communities.
I appreciate all your hates, the way we are all treated is appauling in todays society and I am fully aware of where you are coming from, but lets all remember, we are doing the same job, do not alienate people who you may well want to rely on at a later date, whether it be for an important piece of intel or your controller who will get you back up when needed. They all count.

I think what the author has tried to get across is the sense of despodency felt throughout the Police Forces across the length and bredth of the UK.
Yes, many have joined in to disagree with particular points, but on a whole, most if not all of us would in the main, agree with the sentiments of Rodders.
Oh and for the List ..
I hate finding out that someone screwed up the overtime by putting the claim forms in late so I won't get the money I am entittled to for another month.
I hate being in the only 24/7 unit the doesn't get SPP in my Force

I hate coming home to an empty fridge after a hard shift with no beer in it, as I haven't had the time to stock up.
I hate drunks that moan 'why do you have to nick me, can't you find any real criminals' I've nicked you because I absolutely had to and if I didn't someone was likely to get hurt. Oh and urinating yourself in the van gets my goat too!
I hate the fact that it takes four - six hours to process a simple prisoner
I hate the fact that should they self harm in the cells we are held to account
I hate people, period.

Too true. This really wound me up last night in fact. I was mulling this over for ages. Shift finishes at 11, off licence closes at 11, can't buy beer in uniform. Stuffed! Had to suck the dregs out of a wine box, highly undignified!!
