The Childrens Commissioner for England Dr Margaret Atkinson was on Radio 4 this morning, she wants the age of criminal responsibility raised to 12 years, and says that Thompson and Venables should never have been prosecuted for killing Jamie Bulger. She intimated that perhaps we should be like some other European countries which has the age set at 14.  99% of children that I know, of 10 years old, know the difference between right and wrong and IMHO it should stay at ten.  I think we can see where Atkinson is coming from, Thompson and Venables would have had a 'pat on the head' and told, that was naughty killing Jamie, don't do the same thing again'.  More woolly headed liberals and bean bag sitters trying to take over the UK.  She did say that the way children turn out in later life depends alot on how they are BROUGHT UP by their parents, well tell us something new Dr.

Apart from making a totally stupid and irresponsible remark, it is very very insensitive at this time. She really does need to think again what she has said and afterwards retire and take up doing crosswords.

I would have thought that with the recent events, prosecuting them was the right thing to do because one of them is in a spot of bother again.

What is good for over on the continent is not necessarily good for over here, but some folk just don't see it that way. It is a 'one size fits all attitude'.

The system worked pretty well before the government buggered about with it and removed the doli incapax rule whereby the prosecution could pursue a case against under 14's if they could show "mischievous intent".

Remember that the Children's Commission are a bunch of wet liberals.  They want to make a criminal of any parent who smacks an errant child!

I recall, as a young detective, dealing with a 12-year-old for "bestiality" with dogs some time in the early 1980s.  The first cases which came to light involved in him committing an act with a greyhound and then a cross Labrador (I bet it was very cross afterwards!).  A couple of days later, I went back to the prosecutor and told him the kid had also admitted having sex with a Jack Russell terrier.  Quick as a flash, the prosecutor quipped "Now he's down to a Jack Russell?  How low can you get?"

He certainly knew it was wrong to roger Rover!

It beggars belief, thanks to politically correct left wing loonies like Atkinson, coupled with misuse of Human Rights legislation and the (lack of) effective immigration legislation, my once great country is fast becoming a cesspit of crime

A lot of what she said centered around the children being tried in an adult court. IE the 'big house'. Obviously murder is indictable only leaving few options at the time.
She did say that she believed they should have been incarcerated however. Maybe a youth form of Crown court is what she is advocating.
I think she put it badly though, and voiced her views at a particularly sensitive time.
As for our country being a cesspit, maybe, but lack of parenting skills and no incentive to work is far more responsible than immigration policy.
I was privy to the European immigration figures recently, you'd be surprised how many European countries have  proportionately more immigrants than us.
You can agree with me or you can be wrong.....your choice......(Best Oracle signature 2010....so far.....)

I would not be surprised, but there again a lot of the European mainland countries have a smaller population than ours and/or their landmass is much greater per head.

I think it is all too easy to blame immigration as a blanket cause, in the same way we used to blame strangers and witches for crop failures.

However, if someone is here illegally without an income, the only income they can use is crime, and often they have huge debts to pay to their traffickers. I think the UK as a destination is being "missold" back home to these illegal immigrants by criminals who just want their money.

Come off it M&MBM, you know witches are to blame for many things, even on these Forums, i.e Jinkies, Goldtop, GND, Mrs DF, Croby, Mrs Purity, and yes, even you M&MBM(tongue in cheek).

She is that keen on being thrashed that she will fly to us for it? Perhaps we ought to charge for the service.

I'm with Brutus here. The system did work with the 10-14 in between area. From what I recall it was yet another quick-fix government 'solution' to appease voters, not to actually help the criminal justice system. The sooner the government stop buggering about with laws to get votes the better.

I'm not entirely sure what immigration has to do with this problem, as far as I know Venables and Thompson are both Liverpool natives??

This has been brought to you during a brief encounter with reality from my otherwise bizarre world.
