having a civilian at the public counter will cause problems especially in the evening when manpower is reduced or elsewhere.

What do they do if someone comes in to produce documents will they be capable of telling if the the ones produced are kosher and if they aren't how will it be dealt with?

Secondly what about this civillian is there in the front office and someone comes in to surrender himself because he/she is an absconder or wanted on warrant?

A good idea but really full of holes that to all intents and purposes ineffective.

Yes, sorry. I was taling at cross-purposes, answering a later post on the thread, not the original post. I do think PCSOs can act as reassurance but I don't think they should be used to replace police officers, nor do I think civilians should replace officers, at least, not all of them. Though there must be aspects where someone can be paid less to do a job. And there must be some saspects where a volunteer can be of yuse, especiually if that volunteer had a policing background. or even a counselling background. (I'm thinking of some good work done with drugs offenders.)

I must apologise for any confusion I caused by not reading up beyond the latest post.

Perhaps this is the issue then, you are actually unaware that the leak says Police numbers ARE going to be reduced and we will be replaced by support staff. This is losing Police officers-they aren't just offering an extra helping hand.

We are being replaced.

Ahhhh, I see what the problem is now. I was answering Bikerider's post re volunteers, not saying replacing police officers with civilians was a good idea... I should have quoted him and thereby avoided all this misunderstanding.

let me reiterate. When I said I think it is a good idea, i mean to use volunteers in police stations, not to replace the 28K officers with civilians. That is a bad idea. I can see some civilianss doing some jobs, but not that proportion of jobs. And anyhow, as coppersd get older and less fit, there ought to be posts they can use their skills and knowledge, yet not be on front line duties.

I didn't get through yesterday but will try next time? - Has anybody else heard the rumour about Suffolk going to the same shift pattern as Essex ?

Does anyone know what Cambs work as I although I'm desperate to get in I'm not sure about the 8hr shift pattern..

What are your thoughts ?
